Since the release of the iconic Barbie doll in , however, it has changed quite a bit, changing along with the ideals that society set for women.
The contents range from alphabet blocks, construction sets, and teddy bears to airplanes, trains, mechanical banks, and more. Individually and collectively, they reflect the events, trends, and cultural values of the various times from which they sprang. Those noted below represent some of the most popular and historically significant groupings in the collections. The simplest aviation toys replicated the earliest planes.
Others, sold as kits, encouraged kids to build and fly their own models. Parents and child experts alike favor them because playing with them helps children develop hand-eye coordination, creativity, and the ability to experiment. In the late 19th century, toy makers devised ways of sawing blocks in quantity and embossing the wood with letters, numbers, and figures in low relief.
By the early s, manufacturers produced brightly colored chromolithograph images on paper-covered blocks. The Progressives and educators of the early 20th century promoted alphabet and building blocks as toys that gave toddlers nicely-sized objects to manipulate and, in the case of alphabet blocks especially, also placed the building blocks of reading before children early in their development. Those, along with taxicabs, tractor trailers, dump trucks, and other conveyances, replicated the variety of real-life vehicles on city streets.
In fact, manufacturers boasted that their toys had educational value because boys could pretend to drive cars and trucks that looked like those of their fathers. Construction Sets Playing with building sets requires imagination, planning, critical thinking, and strategizing—all skills that kids rely on when they enter the adult world. Since the 19th century, toy makers have tried to produce a better construction set. Building blocks—which occupy their own collections category at The Strong—have continued to the present, but they have been joined by such 20th-century classics as Tinkertoys, Lincoln Logs, Erector Sets, and others.

Tuesday, May 10, Remember Euro Girl? I wrote the main part of this last week. By now my blister has gone away and my bruised palm is better, but it’s been raining so much I’ve still not been able to mow my yard! I’m taking a break from the monumental task that is mowing my yard, since pushing my little non motorized mower with a broken handle has caused me to develop a blister on the palm of my left hand.
So while I have this chance I’m finally getting to my birthday presents. I knew I was getting her because Ken bought her when we found her at Target before my birthday. He made me wait until my birthday to open her though. As everybody knows by now the MTM dolls pose beautifully and very realistically. My other doll gift was a Euro Girl doll, which I photographed on one nice day we had recently. Does anybody remember these dolls? They were discontinued a while back.
I’ve seen a very fair skin toned doll with this same sculpt being sold by Aliexpress.

Realizing that there could be a gap in the market, Handler suggested the idea of an adult-bodied doll to her husband Elliot , a co-founder of the Mattel toy company. He was unenthusiastic about the idea, as were Mattel’s directors. She gave one to her daughter and took the others back to Mattel.

Barbie at 50 14 Feb Tim Luke, the appraiser on the American version of Cash in the Attic, said collectors should look for excessive black eyeliner, hoop earrings instead of pearls, black open-toe shoes and holes in both feet and shoes to fit into a stand. Mr Luke also recommends looking for a milky tint to the vinyl of the doll. This is unique to the production number ones, as in Mattel developed a vinyl that didn’t turn white with age.
Mr Gotch warns that although a Barbie may have ” ” printed on her back this does not necessarily mean that is when she was produced. The doll’s digits were not altered for a couple of years into production. Barbie has undergone a number of changes. This year-old has been tweaked and tucked to maintain a modern silhouette, with plastic surgery, including facial reconstruction and body reworking. These changes have meant dating the dolls is relatively easy, helped enormously by the clothes so closely following the fashions of the times.
Budding collectors are advised to stick to one genre of Barbie and build from there. Mint-condition clothes still in original packaging are worth as much as a vintage doll. Mr Gotch recommends picking an era with fashion you enjoy and building up a specialist doll and clothing collection to add value. As with any collectables, condition and storage is key.
Look for dolls and clothes in their original boxes, with accessories, and display the collection in a smoke and damp-free environment. Mr Luke recommends trading up when you can and researching dolls available.

Renovations were done in the facility to create three gallery spaces to host permanent and rotating exhibitions and an education room to be used for school field trip visits.
