When this is the case, arriving at an approximate date for an instrument can sometimes be elusive, but sometimes this feat can be achieved by dating ancillary equipment installed in the mechanical music device. One example of this is when the originally installed electric motor is still with the instrument. Unfortunately, for early coin-pianos and orchestrions made through about , the original electric motor is almost certainly missing, and for good reason, replaced by a later motor possibly of the same make and size, but of a different voltage or current type. The reason for this is that in the early days a confusing welter of AC and DC voltages ranging from to volts were commonly encountered, and for AC motors not only were there varying voltage standards, but different frequency standards that ranged from 25 cycles-per-second all the up to cycles, all of which had to be taken into account depending upon where an instrument was shipped. Thus, as electrical power standards for appliance use gradually stabilized around the V cycle motor, all of the old, obsolete, and now oddball motors installed during the earlier years had to be replaced if the coin piano or orchestrion was to enjoy continued commercial use. Makers of American coin-operated pianos and orchestrions—Marquette, Nelson-Wiggen, Operators, Seeburg, Wurlitzer, and others—commonly used small electric motors, usually rated less than one horsepower, made by Holtzer-Cabot or Emerson Electric Company. Less commonly, motors made by Electric Specialty Co. These companies also made most of the motors for American reproducing pianos, and somewhat larger motors for band organs.

Last update Instruction sheet at end of page Style No. Paint is all original. A popular and widely available early fan is the Westinghouse “tank” fan, so named most likely as they are “built like a tank” or do look as if they are so built. Squat, sturdy, heavy, nice lines, and made of cast iron and brass, you will find that tanks pretty much all look alike but that there are a good number of small variations made during their seven years of production from From the beginning AC tanks were two speeds with the switch having two contacts bridged together, usually on the top of the contacts and visible through the switch opening in the top of the base- contacts 2 and 3 are bridged, below, left but hard to see.
I have an early 16″ tank from c.

Offline Last year Bill Voigt and I went through many of his Westinghouse fans and made notes on some of the details of what he has. Below is the result of that survey which might help some of you date your Westys from the teens and into the s. New “micro dated” tags seem to have appeared every year to three or four years.
The “micro dates” are not the date a fan was made. The following was in a columnar form but has not posted that way. Sorry for the difficulty in reading but the information should be decipherable for you.

It resembles the GE “Vortalex” introduced in but this Quiet Blade model differs in that the struts are separate from the cage instead of being integral with the cage wires. The motors are also different in the way the cage mounts to the motor. Fan runs smoothly on all three speeds and oscillates as it should. Power cord needs to be shortened a few inches where it enters the base to eliminate bare wire area.
The fan blades have never been polished and are straight and run very close to perfectly true. The felt base I may have recovered years ago- it looks perfect. This is the cleanest and also the hardest to find of the three Quiet Blade fans I have for sale. This 3-speed fan is completely original from paint to both cords and plug with GE monogram on each prong and felt. It runs and oscillates as a new fan and has had the gearbox grease replaced and oil cups and wicks cleaned and serviced.
There are no problems or items that need to be fixed. Blades are aluminum first year and motor and base are drawn steel. Brass GE monogram on cage. I will include an old and somewhat repaired Century switch from another fan that may be of some use to the buyer.

Blue Network In the s, radio in the United States was dominated by three companies: The NBC Blue Network was created in for the primary purpose of testing new programs on markets of lesser importance than those served by NBC Red, which served the major cities, and to test drama series. Having no power over the networks themselves, the FCC established a regulation forbidding licenses to be issued for radio stations if they were affiliated with a network which already owned multiple networks that provided content of public interest.
Storer in ; its parent company adopted the corporate name American Broadcasting Companies, Inc. While its radio network was undergoing reconstruction, ABC found it difficult to avoid falling behind on the new medium of television. The American Broadcasting Company (ABC) is an American commercial broadcast television network that is a flagship property of Disney–ABC Television Group, a subsidiary of the Disney Media Networks division of The Walt Disney Company.
The company also said it will sell a 60 percent stake in a consortium, NuGen, which plans to build a nuclear plant in Britain. Hit hard by falling demand for nuclear power plants following the meltdown of Japan’s Fukushima plant in , Westinghouse has been grappling with declining sales. The delayed construction of two U.
But until then, it is hard for us to elaborate more on the matter. We will have to take many steps, in this case, to decide whether to acquire Westinghouse or not,” he said. But the matter is much more complicated than that. But the company has not been able to secure additional deals in the Middle East or elsewhere, causing a setback to its goal of becoming one of the world’s top nuclear plant operators.
Under such circumstances, acquiring Westinghouse or a stake in NuGen will likely facilitate KEPCO’s nuclear expansion, according to some government officials. Westinghouse has played a crucial role in the development and operation of nuclear energy throughout the world. It also provided technology and major equipment for nuclear power plants of Korea, which secure around 30 percent of its electricity from nuclear sources. In many cases, Westinghouse has also been a competitor of KEPCO in the latter’s bid to win global contracts of building nuclear power plants.

Top Ten most disappointing high school basketball players from Chicago All the guys on this list have one thing in common: Louis would be on this list. Basketball, Mason was a consensus top 40 national recruit. He had two decent years at Marquette before deciding to transfer to LSU, where he was never really heard from again. Even though he averaged 19 points, 16 rebounds and six blocks his senior year at East, Carlwell mainly got by on just being bigger and stronger than anyone that he was matched up against.
He played very little at Illinois, before he was seriously injured in a car accident.

The fast-moving air substantially enhances the rate at which heat is transferred to the food. It is particularly good where you want the surface to brown, such as roasts and breads; it is not as good for more delicate items, such as custards and cakes, which can set too quickly or get dried out. For cookies, it depends on what effect you want, but many standard types do well in forced-air ovens because the fan helps ensure that the whole oven stays at a uniform temperature despite the presence of several trays.
The best fans can cool you down quickly by making airflow better in rooms your air conditioner or swamp cooler doesn’t reach.
Be sure to read this: As far as early fans go, they are common enough so they can be found at a somewhat high but still affordable cost. They have been named “pancake” by collectors due to their relatively thin but large diameter motor. With a single motor bearing instead of one at the front and rear of the motor as is far more common, they have a unique appearance. Other companies made pancake style motors; Westinghouse, Emerson Trojan , Holtzer Cabbot, and a few others during the very early, c.
To cover all the models and variations of the GE pancake might take a large book. I hope to, in time, show many of the models and variations. Different versions were made in 10″, 12″, 14″ and 16″ sizes, with solid, swivel, or swivel-trunnion frames. There were some wall mount bracket pancakes and even a 10″ spring mounted fan where extra quiet was desired such as in a telephone booth.
Possibly my favorite pancake is not a particularly rare one, nor one of the expensive ones, this GE “stick mount” pancake to the right and below. This model is able to swivel about its vertical axis but does not tilt up or down. For that feature GE offered their “trunnion” model which had the motor sitting in a trunnion allowing the motor to tilt forward and backwards. Thank you John Fetner for these photos and for selling me this nice original and smooth running pancake. I especially like the smooth and simple design of the early pancake 12″ motors.
